Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father..." The response of Jesus puts our mind into a spin. "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father." Wow! How is this?
Remember: Jesus was the Son of God and the Son of man at the same time. His being the Son of God reminds us that He is a member of the trinity. Because the trinity is three in ONE, when you see One you see the others. Philip was looking at Jesus as the Son of man. He was looking at God in the flesh, not realizing that he was looking at God as the Son. "Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me?" Oh the wonders of the Godhead that we struggle to understand!
Philip would understand much later, but at this point of time he struggled. So with us. We struggle to take hold of so many of the mysteries of God.
We may struggle to understand now but one day we will know. "Now I know in part..." - 1 Cor 13:12.
