The book of 1st John is a small book—only 5 short chapters. In the book, John talks about a lot of things. But there is one subject that dominates, and that is love. You will find the word used some 45 times
John helps us to understand what real love is. We need help because we have gotten confused about it. We often mistake lust for love. Or we talk about loving inanimate objects.
Look at some of the things John says about love:
How great is the love the Father lavished on us;
that we should be called the children of God (3:1)
Dear children, let us not love with words
or tongue but with actions and in truth (3:14)
This is how we know what love is:
Jesus Christ laid down His life for us (3:16)
Love comes from God (4:7)
God is love (4:8)
Since God loved us, we ought to love one another (4:11)
If we love each other, God lives in us (4:12)
There is no fear in love (4:18)
We love because He first loved us (4:19)
If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother is a liar. (4:19_)
These are powerful statements. They tell us love is larger than our emotions. Larger than the pleasures of flesh. Larger than we ourselves.
I pray that your thoughts on love can be guided by these ten statements.
